What Makes a Story Stand Out

What makes a real-life story instantly stand out to you?

Olivia Dunnett

Emotional back story — or some unusual feature which will make for an eye-catching headline. If I can immediately picture a cover line, that's a very good sign.

How important is the first line of a pitch to you?

Olivia Dunnett

We generally look through the whole pitch pretty thoroughly, as sometimes there'll be a cover line in there we can use that no one else has spotted. So don't worry too much about a killer opener — just make sure the gold is somewhere in there.

Subject Lines & Headlines
Lila

Lila, PressReacher

What can PRs include in a subject line to show the story is a strong fit for Take a Break?

Olivia Dunnett

I think a focus on the emotional impact is probably the most important thing. If the subject line gives me a sense of how the story felt — shocking, heartwarming, inspiring — that immediately tells me whether it fits our readers.

What kind of headlines or angles catch your attention first?

Olivia Dunnett

Specific numbers — amounts of money in particular work very well on our covers. For example, 'I make £800k a year selling saucy snaps' lands much harder than 'I got rich selling saucy snaps'. The more specific, the more believable and the more shareable.

Specific numbers work very well — e.g. 'I make £800k a year selling saucy snaps' beats 'I got rich selling saucy snaps' every time.

What kind of exclusives are most valuable to you?

Olivia Dunnett

We're always looking for real-life stories which haven't already been snapped up by other big agencies. One of our hardest features to fill are Closer covers — shocking and unusual stories focusing on sex and relationships. If you've got something in that space that's genuinely exclusive, we want to hear from you.

What's your best piece of advice for PRs pitching Take a Break?

Olivia Dunnett

The emphasis should be on a personal story. Rather than 'I'm an expert on X', something like 'Y happened to me, and now I'm an expert on X' works so much better. Our readers connect with lived experience above all else, so the more personal and specific the story, the better it fits.
