Introduction

Getting coverage in a tech publication like Trusted Reviews takes more than a shiny product. It takes a pitch that respects the journalist's time and gives them exactly what they need to do their job. Jessica Gorringe knows this better than most.

As a Staff Writer covering consumer tech across phones, laptops, audio and smart home, Jessica receives countless pitches every week. We sat down with her to find out what actually cuts through, what makes her hit delete, and how PRs can make her life easier when a review unit lands on her desk.

This is the kind of insight that used to be reserved for expensive media training or industry events. We're putting it here, for free, because better pitches make everyone's job easier.

Do you prefer hands-on trials, early samples, or detailed specs first?

Jessica Gorringe

Early samples ahead of an embargo are always appreciated, as it allows us enough time to actually get a feel for the product and see how it performs in everyday use. If that's not possible, then detailed specs is a good second.

What's the one thing a tech PR can include that makes your job easier when reviewing a product?

Jessica Gorringe

As much information as possible! Pricing, specs, launch markets can sometimes be omitted, which can make writing about the product difficult.

Pricing, specs, launch markets. Include all of it.

What's a common mistake you see in tech/product pitches that makes you delete the email?

Jessica Gorringe

It's not so much a mistake but receiving pitches that aren't relevant is always a bit strange.

What format gets you the clearest product story fastest: bullet list, short paragraph, media kit link, or one-pager?

Jessica Gorringe

Bullet points with the media kit or one-pager attached is perfect in my opinion. That way it's easy to read and helps me see the clear points easily.

If you could fix one thing about tech launch pitches, what would it be?

Jessica Gorringe

Make them simpler! Skip the long, wordy subject lines and jargon-filled emails and send a simple, easy to understand (and easy to scan through when you're multitasking!) pitch.

I totally understand it's all too easy to over complicate a pitch, as it comes from genuinely wanting news and product launches to get picked up.

Skip the jargon-filled emails. Make it simple and easy to scan.
