Nikole Hannah-Jones is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist known for her coverage of civil rights in the United States. Born on April 9, 1976, in Waterloo, Iowa, she began her career covering education for the Raleigh News & Observer from 2003. In 2006, she moved to Portland, Oregon, where she wrote for The Oregonian, focusing on feature work and government beats. Hannah-Jones joined ProPublica in 2011, covering civil rights and investigating redlining and housing discrimination. She became a staff writer at The New York Times Magazine in 2015 and is the creator of The 1619 Project. Hannah-Jones is the inaugural Knight Chair in Race and Journalism at Howard University and has founded the Center for Journalism & Democracy. She also co-founded the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting and launched the 1619 Freedom School in her hometown.
