Larry Elliott
About Larry Elliott
Larry Elliott CBE is a veteran UK economics journalist best known for nearly three decades as economics editor at The Guardian, a post he held from 1996 until November 2024. His bylines at The Guardian date back to 1988, and he continues to write economics analysis and commentary for the publication after stepping down from the editor role. His work focuses on macroeconomic policy, globalisation, trade, Europe, development, and the intersection of economics and the environment. Elliott has authored or co-authored seven books, many with Dan Atkinson, including titles that anticipated structural weaknesses in the UK economy and critiqued market fundamentalism. His reporting and commentary are known for clear, accessible analysis grounded in data, a willingness to challenge consensus, and a perspective critical of aspects of EU economic policy. Over a career beginning at the Hemel Hempstead Evening Post-Echo (1978–1983) and Press Association (1983–1988), he has built a reputation as one of the UK’s most prominent economics voices. He also serves on boards and as a visiting fellow, and appears frequently as a speaker on UK and global economic outlooks.
