Agustinus Wibowo

Agustinus Wibowo is an Indonesian travel writer and photographer renowned for pioneering a new genre in Indonesian travel literature through his deeply personal and culturally immersive narratives. A computer science graduate from Tsinghua University in Beijing, he began his career with a 2005 'Grand Overland Journey' from China to South Africa, chronicling his experiences across the Himalayas, South Asia, Afghanistan, Iran, and Central Asia. Stranded in Afghanistan for three years, he developed a photojournalistic focus that informed his debut book *Selimut Debu* (A Blanket of Dust, 2010), followed by *Garis Batas* (Borderlines, 2011) and *Titik Nol* (Ground Zero, 2013/2015). His work explores identity, nationalism, and cultural syncretism, often blending memoir with anthropological insights. Fluent in multiple languages, he has translated Chinese literary works and frequently addresses themes of minority experiences and cross-cultural understanding. Currently based in Jakarta, he continues to write about nationalism in the Malay Archipelago and engages in virtual literary education during the pandemic.
