Aaron Morrison

Aaron Morrison is an award-winning multimedia journalist currently serving as the Race and Ethnicity News Editor at the Associated Press (AP) in New York City, a role he assumed in August 2023. He leads AP’s coverage of race and ethnicity, overseeing a team that produces in-depth reporting on civil rights, criminal justice reform, politics, and grassroots social movements. Morrison previously spent over three years as a national race and ethnicity writer at AP, where he spearheaded investigations into topics such as the impact of COVID-19 on prisoner rehabilitation, Black Lives Matter finances, and racial disparities amplified by the pandemic. Prior to AP, he was a senior reporter at The Appeal and an on-air correspondent and senior writer for Mic, focusing on mass incarceration and police use of force. Morrison’s work has also appeared in The Record (Bergen County, NJ) and he was a freelance resident correspondent for the Miami Herald at the United Nations from 2012-2015, covering Latin America and the Caribbean. He is an adjunct lecturer at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, where he developed the 'Reporting on Race' course. Morrison is recognized for his rigorous, source-driven reporting, multimedia storytelling, and commitment to elevating underrepresented voices. He is a longtime member of the National Association of Black Journalists and was honored as an Outstanding Journalism Alumnus by San Francisco State University in 2018.
